Girl Talk

Girl Talk for 4th-7th graders addresses the timely topic of adolescent growth and development and the physical, social, and emotional changes that girls experience during puberty. Poe educators show off some of our 3-D exhibits, lead activities, and hold candid discussions to help daughters and their caregivers explore a range of topics from the workings of the reproductive system to the menstrual cycle to feminine hygiene protection and more. Puberty Detectives

Start the conversation about puberty and entering adolescence. Students step into the role of a detective as they learn to respect the differences of others, find the clues to determine the qualities of healthy and unhealthy relationships and investigate the physical, emotional and social changes related to puberty. Several interactive activities enhance the experience of the participant’s “training” before becoming an official Poe Center Puberty Detective.

Guy Talk

Guy Talk will equip boys with accurate age-appropriate information developed to help with healthy growth and development. Workshop topics include the changes which happen during puberty, the reproductive system, proper nutrition, and hygiene. Girl Talk 2

Presented by the Poe Center, Girl Talk 2 is a unique workshop designed for middle school-aged girls and their caregivers. This interactive, 1.5 hour workshop expands upon the information from Girl Talk 1 related to the growth and development girls experience during puberty, including the structure and function of the male and female reproductive systems and the way they work together throughout the processes of fertilization and conception. In addition, sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy, as well as abstinence and other methods of prevention, are introduced. Regarding the social and emotional changes that come with puberty, concepts related to internet and social media safety, peer pressure, boundaries and consent, and healthy relationships are addressed. The program has been designed with activities that facilitate and encourage open parent-child/ caregiver-child communication both during the program at Poe and into the future. Girl Talk 1 is a recommended prerequisite for Girl Talk 2. This program is for mothers and daughters or trusted adults and daughters.

Facts of Life

Facts of Life addresses the facts of puberty and the male and female reproductive systems so participants can review the menstrual cycle, fertilization, and implantation. Students will discuss the effects of culture, media, and family values on decisions they make. Facts about Sexually transmitted infections (including HIV and HPV)) are introduced. Methods to prevent sexually transmitted infections are summarized. Facts about what sexual harassment is and learning strategies to being safe are also discussed. Interactive activities are utilized to reinforce program content.

Healthy Relationships 101

Healthy Relationships 101 explores the facets of what makes a healthy relationship. Setting and communicating personal boundaries, identifying warning signs of unhealthy relationships, and identifying societal influences that impact relationships are discussed through engaging activities, multi-media, and thoughtful reflection.

Myth Busters

There are so many myths and false information surrounding Sexually Transmitted Infections and Contraception methods. Myth Busters breaks those myths by discussing the facts about STI’s (including HIV/AIDS) and FDA approved contraception methods while stressing the importance of Abstinence as a positive choice for young people. Students will get to participate in age appropriate interactive activities to reinforce the program content.

Mountain Climbing: Reducing Risk and Setting Boundaries

Being a young person is tough, and there are many difficult and complex decisions young people have to make – in particular regarding their sexual health. Mountain Climbing helps young people better understand the risks and benefits regarding different decisions they may make concerning their sexual health, including risk management, understanding STIs, forms of FDA approved contraceptives, and communication. Participants will get to participate in age-appropriate interactive activities to reinforce the program content.

Your Voice Matters

Your Voice Matters! empowers parents/guardians with the knowledge and skills to effectively communicate with their children about the changes that occur during adolescence. The presentation includes an overview of changes during puberty, as well as tips and tools for parents for creating and maintaining open lines of communication. Conversations about puberty can be challenging, but your voice is instrumental in making sure any confusing messages or misinformation from other sources isn't the only thing your kids hear.
